Former Arsenal man Samir Nasri has defended Arsene Wenger amidst the club’s recent struggles and stated his belief that the blame should fall at the feet of the players.
Wenger’s future at Arsenal is under intense scrutiny following a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich, which left the Gunners on the brink of yet another Round of 16 exit in the Champions League- whilst any outside chances of Premier League glory were ended recently with back-to-back defeats against Watford and Chelsea.
However, Nasri believes pointing the finger of blame on Wenger is simply wrong and the Manchester City man, currently on-loan at Sevilla, believes the players are to blame. Quoted by Sky Sports, the Frenchman said:
“You cannot criticise a guy like that, it is impossible. Arsenal was a big club but he made it even bigger. People need to be fair. It is not because Arsenal don’t have success in the league that it’s his fault, that is the players who are on the pitch, it’s the players who do not get the results.”
“It’s hard for me to say something about him because I owe him a lot of things. I came to the Premier League because of him and I have had a good career because of him too. He gave me confidence and he made me a better player and I just think all the players who played with him, when they left they became better players.”
“I don’t think it’s him, there are a lot of things at Arsenal; the players, the board, that need to be checked out and not just Arsene.”
Whilst there is truth behind Nasri’s comments, it’s impossible not to place some blame upon Wenger as the Gunners have consistently struggled to make progress in recent years and are at great risk of falling behind their rivals.
