According to a report by The Telegraph providing an update on Everton’s managerial search, it “would be a big surprise” if former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino ended up at Goodison Park.
The report states that Carlo Ancelotti is the board’s new first-choice option following his sacking by Napoli on Tuesday night, despite the fact he had just overseen a 4-0 win in the Champions League with the Serie A outfit qualifying for the last-16 of the competition.
The 60-year-old is said to be open to the prospect of returning to the Premier League eight years after being sacked by Chelsea, but he may want to see if Arsenal are interested before he considers any potential offer from the Merseyside outfit.
The Telegraph goes on to say that the Toffees hierarchy have spoken with former Gunners chief Unai Emery who could move up their list of candidates if they miss out on Ancelotti, while they say it “would be a big surprise” if the “highly admired” Pochettino decided to make his return to management as Marco Silva’s successor.
The South American was sacked by Spurs on November 19 after five years in charge, and was replaced by Jose Mourinho less than 12 hours later.
Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think…
FFC wrote previously about how the Argentine would be an outstanding candidate for Everton following a report saying he had given a “resounding no” when sounded out about the vacancy.
The latest report suggests nothing has changed in that regard and that majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright will have to look elsewhere.
In other Everton news, a Carlo Ancelotti comment from 2017 suggests a 30-year-old Toffees man would be an important player if he did take the job…
