As reported by The Guardian, Newcastle United are keen on signing Rennes striker Firmin Ndombe Mubele this January.
What’s the story?
Newcastle have scored less than 20 English Premier League goals this season and badly need to add some firepower to their attack in next month’s transfer window if they’re going to stay clear of a relegation dogfight.
One player said to be interesting Rafa Benitez is Rennes forward Firmin Ndombe Mubele, who has been impressing with performances in Ligue 1 this season.
That’s according to The Guardian, who say the Magpies are one of four Premier League clubs interested in adding him to their ranks next month.
Who is he?
After impressing for Qatari side Al-Ahli, Mubele signed for Ligue 1 side Rennes at the end of last January’s transfer window and after taking half a season to settle into French football, has shown improved form this season.
A DR Congo international, he’s scored five and assisted twice in 16 appearances so far this season in France, demonstrating that he could add something to the Newcastle attack.
He may not have extensive playing experience but at 23-years-old has plenty of room for improvement and would at least give supporters hope that more dynamic performances are one their way in the Magpies’ attacking third.
Whether it’s Mubele or another, it’s an area Benitez needs to address. Summer signing Joselu has failed to inspire confidence and unless the club invest in another attacker next month, it could be a long second half of the season for fans.
