Pundit Paul Merson has claimed that Mauricio Pellegrino could be sacked as Southampton boss if the Saints lose heavily at Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.
Southampton have not won in the Premier League since the end of November, and suffered a 5-2 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Boxing Day.
A difficult run of results has left last season’s League Cup finalists in 14th position in the Premier League table, and they could end 2017 in the relegation zone if results go against them this weekend.
They will visit a Man United team who have drawn their last two against Leicester City and Burnley, but the Red Devils are the overwhelming favourites to triumph on home soil.
Merson has claimed that Southampton will be worried coming into the match, and the former Arsenal forward fears that Pellegrino could be sacked if his team ‘are battered’ at Old Trafford.
Merson told Sky Sports:
“Saints are all over the place, and I didn’t see too many of their players playing for Mauricio Pellegrino at Wembley, which is very worrying.
“There are ways of losing football matches, and the way they lost against Spurs was not good at all. I’d be worried coming into this game. If they are battered again, I think Pellegrino could go.”
Southampton have won on two of their last three league visits to Old Trafford, but a Romelu Lukaku effort saw United win 1-0 at St Mary’s earlier this season.
